The hook pierces the eye, risk of long-term vision impairment

The Central Eye Hospital received patient Tr. B. N. L, 13 years old, studying in Phu Son commune, Ninh Binh, in a state of serious right eye injury, the hook still stuck in his eye.

According to the family, in the morning of the same day, L and a friend went fishing. Because they were standing too close to each other, when the friend snatched the hook, the hook flew over and stuck deep into L's right eye.

Dr. Tham Truong Khanh Van, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Central Eye Hospital, said that the child suffered severe damage to many structures of the eye. The hook penetrated through the tear on the skin of the lower eyelid, continuing to penetrate the cornea, causing the vestibular to collapse. The lens body was also cloudy and broken, while the posterior half of the eyeball could not be observed due to serious damage.

Doctors quickly performed surgery to remove the hook from the eye, suture and restore the eyelids and cornea, and at the same time inject intraocular medication. After surgery, the right eye vision of the patient is currently only at the finger counting level at a distance of 0.4 m. The child continues to be monitored and treated actively.

According to the doctor, this is a particularly serious eye injury, with the risk of long-term sequelae and affecting vision.

Liners, pens, compasses can also cause blindness

Also at the Department of Ophthalmology, a 12-year-old patient named N.T. H. A., residing in Bo De ward, Hanoi, has just been treated for right eye injury due to an accident while playing with friends.

While playing, the patient was hit directly in the eye by a ruler thrown by a friend. Upon admission, the child's right eye was swollen, with a torn cornea in the central area, broken and cataracts. Vision could only recognize handballs at a distance of 0.1 m.

Doctors warn that items that seem very familiar in learning such as rulers, pens, compasses... if used, held or thrown incorrectly can completely cause serious eye injuries.

Especially, as the new school year is approaching, the risk of eye accidents in children may increase during learning, playing and participating in collective activities.
