Ho Chi Minh City - On September 6, Children's Hospital 2 said that it had just successfully operated on a drug-resistant epilepsy patient, the seizures of epilepsy decreased significantly.

The patient was born in 2020, Gia Lai province, right from the age of 1, the patient was diagnosed with epilepsy, despite undergoing long-term internal medicine treatment, the condition did not respond. Children experience hypotonia attacks many times a day, seriously affecting daily life and development.

According to BS.CKII Pham Hai Uyen - Deputy Head of the Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital 2, through examination and in-depth evaluation, it was determined that the patient had indications for callophytic surgery to control epilepsy attacks. This is a difficult technique, requiring doctors with in-depth expertise and accuracy in each operation, in order to minimize the risk of affecting important functional areas of the brain.

BS.CKII Nguyen Thanh Do - Deputy Head of Neurosurgery Department, Children's Hospital 2 said: "After we operated on the patient, the patient's condition improved significantly. From about 100 seizures per day, the seizures decreased significantly, helping children to play, study and live more conveniently.

Drug-resistant epilepsy is a condition in which patients still experience seizures even after being treated with appropriate medication. In these cases, surgery may be considered when the brain area or mechanism causing the seizures is identified and the patient meets professional criteria.

According to doctors, surgery to treat epilepsy in children is a complex technique, especially when the epileptic area is located near areas that perform important functions such as language or movement. Patients need to be comprehensively assessed before surgery to determine the location, spread rate of the epileptic vomit as well as the risk of affecting neurological functions.

Children's Hospital 2 has cooperated with the University of Alabama (USA) in the field of epilepsy surgery, gradually deploying specialized techniques to treat children with drug-resistant epilepsy.
