Familiar foods and drinks can increase the risk of liver damage

Thanh Thanh |

Fried food, processed meat... are secretly causing fat accumulation, leading to inflammation and impaired liver function.

French fries

Fried dishes, especially fast foods like french fries, contain very high calories and saturated fats. More worryingly, when starchy tubers such as potatoes are fried in oil at high temperatures, they will produce toxic compounds, typically acrylamide.

Regularly consuming foods containing these compounds increases inflammatory reactions, causes oxidative stress and accelerates the rate of fat accumulation in liver cells. To protect the liver, you should limit fried potatoes with oil in stores and switch to the original grilling method or use an oil-free fryer at home.

Processed meat

Sausages, bacon, sausages or cold cuts are convenient foods but pose many risks to the liver. The combination of preservatives (nitrite, nitrate) with high levels of heme iron, sodium salt and saturated fat in this group of meats can trigger inflammatory reactions, cause oxidative stress and reduce the body's insulin sensitivity.

If your weekly menu has too much red meat and processed foods, start cutting down by replacing a few meals with lean poultry meat (chicken breast), fresh fish or plant-based protein from beans.

Soft drinks and sugary drinks

Carbonated soft drinks, milk tea, canned juice or high-sugar coffee all put great pressure on the liver. Notably, drinks that use fructose or sucrose (a food combined of glucose and fructose) are the most dangerous causes.

Unlike glucose that can be metabolized throughout the body, fructose is almost completely processed in the liver. Consuming too much fructose causes the liver to be overloaded and convert excess sugar into fatty acids. This process not only causes fat accumulation in the liver, increasing the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, but also leads to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance.

Alcohol

If alcohol and beer are abused for a long time, damage to liver tissue will gradually accumulate into hepatitis, cirrhosis and irreversible liver failure, even progressing to liver cancer. The more and longer the drinking habit, the higher the risk of liver damage.
