The organ donor was Ms. N.V.B.T, 46 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City. She had a motorbike accident on the afternoon of June 24 and was taken to the Emergency Department in a state of severe traumatic brain injury, cerebral edema and multiple injuries. Despite the efforts of doctors to treat her, Ms. T still fell into a deep coma and after three assessments, was determined to be completely brain dead.
In the pain of losing a loved one, Ms. T.'s family made a brave decision: to donate organs. "I hope my departure can bring life to others," Ms. T's younger sister shared.
On the evening of June 28, the medical team at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City started the organ retrieval, closely coordinating with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and major hospitals across the country. The process was organized methodically, from professional to legal and logistical, under the continuous direction of the hospital's Board of Directors.
The thank-you ceremony for the organ donor was solemnly held at 4:00 a.m. on June 29, before the surgery began. In the operating room, when everything was just a hearing of a vital tracker, the heart of the donor was taken at 5:13 and immediately taken to Tan Son Nhat airport, transferred to Hue. Just three hours later, Hue Central Hospital announced that the transplanted heart had broken again, a life had just been revived.
At the same time, the two kidneys were removed at 5:08 and 5:16, respectively. Right at noon of the same day, two patients with end-stage kidney failure were successfully transplanted at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, under the support of doctors at Cho Ray Hospital.
Dr. Mai Phan Tuong Anh - Deputy Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital - said that this is the third case of brain-dead organ donation at the hospital: "Every decision in this journey is to respect the lives of both the deceased and those who can continue to live".
The story is not only a medical miracle, but also a touching testament to humanity. In the moment that seemed to be lost, Ms. T's family chose to give life as the flame that continues to burn in the lives of others.
organ donation not only helps save people, but also spreads the message of compassion. That is a way to live on - in the most beautiful sense, when passing away is not the end, but the beginning of new lives.
