The Role of Diet in Cholesterol Management
According to Dr Edwina Raj, Head of Services - Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, diet plays an important role in controlling high cholesterol, adopting a diet with a good amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and lean meat is important to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Additionally, foods rich in unsaturated fats, plant sterols, and soluble fiber also significantly reduce LDL cholesterol.
Should people with high cholesterol eat fish?
“Including fish in your diet can help lower your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of a variety of health conditions,” says Dr. Raj. “In addition to lowering cholesterol, fish is a great source of protein and other important nutrients. ”
Including seafood in your diet twice a week can help people with high cholesterol improve their heart health and reduce their risk of complications related to high cholesterol levels.
What kind of fish is good for the heart?
People with high cholesterol should consume fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to lower triglyceride levels and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, adds Dr. Raj.
Fatty fish also provide a lot of protein and essential nutrients for the body. However, these fish should be prepared properly, such as grilled or steamed, to get the most benefits and avoid unhealthy fats.
