Here is how to recognize a health condition through the color of the phlegm according to the advice of Dr. Vikas Mittal, Head of the Lung Department at CK Birla Hospital (Delhi, India).
transparent paralysis: This is a sign of a healthy respiratory tract, consisting primarily of water, salt and protein. However, if the cough lasts for more than two weeks, it can be a sign of irritation or mild infection, and should be assessed by a doctor if the symptoms do not subside.
White or gray phlegm: Often due to exposure to dust, pollutants, or allergies. White or gray phlegm can also indicate mucus accumulation in the airways, especially when there are persistent or worsening symptoms, such as in cases of sinusitis or chronic bronchitis.
Yellow: Yellow shows the presence of pus or immune cells, which are common in infections. If the yellow phlegm lasts for more than two weeks or shows signs of getting worse, you should consult a doctor.
Green phlegm: Often indicates a bacterial infection, such as Pseudomonas. This condition can be serious, especially when accompanied by fever, shortness of breath or other symptoms. If you experience green rice, you need to seek medical attention immediately.
pink phlegm: pink phlegm can be a sign of blood mixing with secretions, a typical symptom of pulmonary edema, often caused by heart failure. This is an emergency condition that requires immediate treatment.
Red phlegm: Red phlegm is a clear sign of blood in the phlegm, which can indicate a lung infection, injury or even cancer. If you experience red phlegm, you need to see a doctor immediately for timely diagnosis and treatment.
Brown phlegm: Brown can be caused by old blood or dead tissue, often associated with chronic lung damage or serious infections. If the phlegm is brown, you need to consult a doctor immediately.
Changes in the color of the rice husks should not be ignored. While some changes may not be serious, blue, pink, red or brown phlegm needs to be diagnosed and treated by a doctor to prevent serious health problems.
