According to Dr. Sushmita Sharma, Ophthalmologist, Manipal Hospital, India (India), with hot weather and high humidity in the summer, the eyes are susceptible to health problems, of which eye infections are one of the common problems. These diseases not only cause discomfort but can also seriously affect vision if not treated promptly.
Common eye infections in summer
Summer brings many factors that can cause eye infections, including bacteria, viruses and environmental impacts. Some common eye infections in the summer are:
Conjunctivitis (Red eye pain): This is an infection of the tissue that covers the white part of the eye, causing pain, redness and itching. Colitis is commonly caused by bacteria, viruses or allergies, and can easily spread when exposed to swimming pool water or infected people.
Eye bags: Eye bags are red, soft lumps that appear in the eyelash roots or eyelids due to oil gland infection. Heavy sweat and the use of cosmetics can clog oil glands and create conditions for bacteria to grow.
Corneal infections: This is an infection of the optic retain ( curtain), commonly found when swimming in polluted water or contact with dirty water in outdoor swimming pools. Corneal infections cause pain, red eyes and reduced vision.
Dry eyes: Hot weather, air conditioners, and summer winds can dry your eyes, causing irritation and spreading infections if not properly cared for.
How to protect your eyes from infection
Wash your hands regularly: One of the main causes of eye infections is contact with bacteria through your hands. Therefore, you should wash your hands before touching your eyes.
Avoid touching your eyes: touching your eyes can easily transmit bacteria from the surrounding environment into your eyes. Avoid using dirty hands to rub your eyes.
Proper eye protection: When swimming, wear eye protection glasses to avoid contact with swimming pool water that may contain bacteria. In addition, you should not share a towel or swimming glasses with others.
Use sunglasses when outdoors: To protect your eyes from strong light and wind, you should wear sunglasses when outdoors.
Daily eye care: If you often have to use a computer or electronic device, take a break and blink your eyes regularly to reduce dry eyes. You can also use eye drops to keep your eyes moist.
