Many patients come to the clinic for acute conjunctivitis
Menstrual change is a time of sensitivity to health, especially eye diseases.
Information from the Tam Anh High-Tech Eye Center, after the Lunar New Year 2025, the season with prolonged cold air, the incidence of flu and some respiratory diseases will increase. Among them, many patients with respiratory infectious diseases such as flu and measles have signs of disease in the eyes. Some cases of severe eye disease cause vision loss.
Thu Duc City Hospital informed that according to the Eye Department, on average, about 30 patients come to the clinic every day for acute conjunctivitis (red eye pain). This number has decreased compared to the same period last year, but the situation still needs to be monitored.
According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Thu Duc City Hospital, conjunctivitis can come from many different causes. The most common of which are viruses, bacteria, and allergic reactions. For viral conjunctivitis, the disease occurs when a virusindares and destroys cells, accompanied by an inflammatory response of the immune system.
Meanwhile, bacterial conjunctivitis often occurs when bacteria penetrate small scratches or when the protective system of the eyes is weakened, characterized by blue or yellow constipation.
Doctor Quang Huy added that during the winter-spring transition, the number of cases of allergic conjunctivitis often increases. At this time, the air contains a lot of pollen, combined with cold weather and less wind, causing more fine dust and allergen deposits. This increases the risk of allergic conjunctivitis in people with sensitive copes.
What is worrying is that many people have the habit of self-treating at home with self-made eye drops, especially drugs containing corticosteroids without knowing it.
"The unit has received many cases of secondary complications of hyperopia due to abuse of eye drops containing steroids because of their pleasant properties and rapid reduction of unpleasant symptoms caused by steroids. If this condition persists, the eye pressure increases silently and can lead to glaucoma, which can lead to permanent loss of vision," warns Dr. Quang Huy.
Effective prevention
Regarding the duration of treatment, Dr. Huy said that each type of conjunctivitis has a different progression. Viral conjunctivitis usually goes away on its own after 7-10 days, while allergic conjunctivitis can last from a few days to a few months depending on the individual and exposure to the foreign object. For bacterial conjunctivitis alone, the treatment time depends on the response to antibiotics.
To effectively prevent, people should wear protective glasses when going out, avoid contact with allergens and keep their home clean, especially stuffed animals, blankets, and eye hygiene. In particular, when there are symptoms such as red eyes, eye pain, watery eyes, and acne, patients need to go to a medical facility immediately for appropriate examination and treatment, to avoid unfortunate complications that may occur due to self-treatment or self-dygnosis, because there are many serious eye diseases with similar symptoms.
For children, because the immune system is not yet complete, they can get the disease more times than adults. Exposure and the creation of antibodies to exercise the immune system is one of the necessary steps for the development of an increasingly complete immune system. Parents need to pay special attention and monitor carefully when children have unusual signs in the eyes, do not be subjective and self-treat at home.
