Military Hospital 175 has just successfully performed endoscopic submucosal dissection, removing a large submucosal tumor for an elderly patient.

Patient T.T.M.H (born in 1966, Binh Thuan) went to Military Hospital 175 for examination because of symptoms of epigastric pain for many months, feeling of indigestion. Through gastroscopy, the patient discovered a submucosal tumor lesion measuring 4x6cm in the body of the stomach, with a shallow ulcer on the surface of the lesion.

After interdisciplinary consultation between Gastroenterology and Abdominal Surgery, the surgical team decided to perform endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) to completely remove the entire lesion.

Due to the large size of the tumor, the intervention had many potential complications such as bleeding or stomach perforation during the dissection process. However, thanks to the skill and expertise of the performing team, the tumor was removed intact without causing damage to surrounding organs.

After only 5 days of treatment, the patient recovered, walked normally and was discharged from the hospital. Pathology results confirmed that the tumor was a benign polyp, with no risk of developing into cancer.

Doctor Hoang Anh Dung - Department of Gastroenterology, Military Hospital 175, who directly performed the above technique, said: "Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a therapeutic endoscopic procedure used to remove early-stage cancer or large polyps in the esophagus, stomach, colon, and anus without surgery. This is one of the minimally invasive intervention methods that is safe for all ages, especially elderly patients with early-stage gastrointestinal cancer."
