On March 12, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that the unit had just successfully performed a partial hip replacement surgery for patient D.T. T (106 years old, residing in Gio Linh commune, Quang Tri province). This is the oldest patient to have undergone hip replacement surgery at the hospital.
The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe pain in the right thigh and right hip joint, losing mobility after falling from the bed. The patient has a history of cardiovascular disease due to coronary artery atherosclerosis.
Through examination and diagnostic imaging, doctors determined that the patient had a right femur fracture, a type of injury common in the elderly. However, due to very old age, severe osteoporosis and accompanying cardiovascular diseases, the surgery posed many risks of complications during and after surgery such as blood loss, infection, pulmonary embolism or acute myocardial infarction.
Before hip replacement surgery, patients undergo all preoperative tests to assess risks. At the same time, the hospital organizes multi-specialized consultations according to the ERAS model with the participation of nutrition, psychotherapy and rehabilitation specialists to optimize preoperative conditions and support early recovery after surgery. Patients are also actively treated for osteoporosis prevention and blood clot prevention.
After a comprehensive assessment, doctors of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery indicated partial hip replacement surgery, which is a method to help shorten the recovery time of mobility. During surgery, patients are closely monitored for anesthesia and resuscitation; and preventive antibiotics are applied according to recommendations and strict sterile procedures. Surgery operations are performed quickly and accurately, minimizing soft tissue damage.
The surgery lasted about 40 minutes and was successful. 2 days after surgery, the patient could sit up and practice rehabilitation. Six days after surgery, the patient was discharged in the joy of his family and doctors.
It is known that patient D.T. T is a Vietnamese Heroic Mother.
