Doctors at the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital have just successfully performed a special cesarean section for a 60-year-old pregnant woman - a case of very high risk in obstetrics.
The pregnant woman was hospitalized when she was 38.2 weeks pregnant. Although her overall condition was temporarily stable, it was accompanied by a series of noteworthy risk factors: chronic hypertension undergoing treatment, gestational diabetes that must be controlled with insulin daily, and a complex history of surgery including ectopic pregnancy surgery and uterine space separation surgery.
According to doctors, at the age of 60, pregnancy and childbirth are no longer normal physiological processes but become a major challenge for the cardiovascular, endocrine system and the body's recovery ability. Each indicator must be strictly controlled, and each development is potentially unpredictable.
Complications such as cardiovascular accidents, stroke due to high blood pressure, blood disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, infection or slow recovery are always present. In particular, multiple surgery history increases the risk of adhesions, tissue damage and bleeding during surgery, requiring the team to perform each operation with almost absolute accuracy.
Before surgery, the survival indicators of the pregnant woman were controlled at a relatively stable level: blood pressure 125/80 mmHg, pulse 85 beats/minute, blood sugar maintained by insulin. However, in special cases, this stability has never been synonymous with subjectivity.
The surgery was performed by a team directly directed by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Throughout the surgery process, in addition to high concentration on expertise, the professor continuously talked and encouraged to help the pregnant woman reduce stress.
The baby weighing 2.8kg cried loudly, with good reflexes.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh performs slow umbilical cord removal - an indication that benefits newborns - and sends early life wishes to the "little warrior" who has just gone through a special journey with his mother.
According to experts, in special cases such as elderly pregnant women, success is not only limited to a smooth birth, but also the process of monitoring and post-operative resuscitation - a stage that still contains many challenges.
Through this case, doctors also recommend that very old pregnancies need to be managed at specialized medical facilities, where there are sufficient conditions and personnel to handle complex situations.
