According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, the amount of blood donated recently in Ho Chi Minh City has decreased sharply, affecting the supply of blood for treatment. Therefore, the Ho Chi Minh City health sector is calling on agencies, units, localities and all people to join hands to participate in voluntary blood donation activities, contributing to ensuring blood supply for treatment.
According to the Department of Health, the Ho Chi Minh City health sector chaired a meeting with the participation of Cho Ray Hospital, Hematology Blood Transfusion Hospital and the Ho Chi Minh City Red Cross Society to assess the situation of blood reception and supply in the transition period, when the health systems of Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau merged into Ho Chi Minh City.
Based on the Department's proposal, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee agreed to let the Blood Transfusion Center under Cho Ray Hospital continue to be the unit supplying blood and blood products for regions 2 and 3 (including the former areas of Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau) until December 31, 2025. At the same time, the Department of Health was assigned to coordinate blood receipt and distribution activities in accordance with the actual needs and capabilities of the units.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also requested localities to complete the Steering Committee for voluntary blood donation at ward and commune levels; strengthen coordination with the City Humanitarian Blood Donation Center to maintain a stable blood donation schedule, without interruption during the system conversion period.
According to reports from blood receiving units, the amount of blood donated recently has tended to decrease, affecting the ability to supply for treatment.
Statistics in July 2025 showed that although the plan to receive 27,560 blood bags, in reality, only 25,034 bags were collected, a shortage of 2,526 bags compared to the expected, while the amount of blood supplied was 27,607 bags. As of July 31, the total blood reserve in Ho Chi Minh City was 6,713 bags, down nearly 30% compared to the beginning of the month (9,427 bags).
A forecast from the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital said that if there are no measures to increase blood donation mobilization in August and the coming months, the amount of blood received will only meet 70-80% of treatment needs, directly affecting emergency and treatment activities at hospitals.
In this situation, the Department of Health has requested the Hematology Blood Transfusion Hospital to proactively develop a support plan, ready to coordinate with the Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital to ensure blood supply for treatment for the entire health system of Ho Chi Minh City.
