In recent days, according to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, due to the sharp drop in temperature, the number of patients hospitalized for treatment due to respiratory diseases has increased, especially children and the elderly. For children, the number of patients with influenza A coming to medical facilities in Ninh Binh for examination and treatment has increased dramatically.
Mr. Pham Van Dau - Director of Ninh Binh Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that from January 2025 to now, on average, the hospital has received from 250 to 300 cases of children coming for examination and treatment of respiratory diseases, especially influenza A, every day.Of which, the number of children hospitalized for treatment increased by more than 30% compared to normal weather days.
According to doctors at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ninh Binh Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the reason for the increase in children getting sick is due to sudden changes in weather, which is a favorable condition for viruses and bacteria to develop.Children aged 6 months to under 36 months have weak resistance and have not adapted to the cold weather, so they are susceptible to illness and serious illness.
Dr. Vu Thi Son - Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ninh Binh Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that most patients when admitted to the hospital had high fever, prolonged fever, wheezing cough accompanied by complications of flu such as: pneumonia, otitis media, acute diarrhea.
When receiving flu patients, doctors must treat them to reduce their fever and use a combination of medications. Depending on each patient's condition, doctors have different treatment and prevention regimens. Normally, simple flu cases are treated for about 3 days before being discharged from the hospital. Flu cases with secondary infections require treatment for 7 to 10 days.
"During the changing seasons, children should be fed and drink enough, improve their resistance, especially ensure hygiene in the family, always keep the room cool, have air flow change daily and when the weather changes to cold, children should not go out, change the temperature suddenly. For families with people showing signs of fever and cough, they should be isolated to limit the source of infection for children" - Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ninh Binh Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital Vu Thi Son recommended.
At the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine, Ninh Binh General Hospital, the number of patients admitted and treated at the Department tends to increase by 20-30% compared to normal. Most of the hospitalized patients are elderly, have underlying diseases, and have low resistance.
According to a representative of the Ninh Binh Provincial Center for Disease Control, since January 2025, the number of patients with influenza has increased compared to the previous 2 months. Regular monitoring results at provincial hospitals show that the number of hospitalizations due to influenza tends to increase but according to the seasonal cycle of the disease. Up to this point, no unusual developments in clinical symptoms have been recorded. Accordingly, people should get vaccinated against influenza every year. The best time to get vaccinated is in September and October every year.
"Complications of respiratory diseases, especially lower respiratory diseases, are very dangerous, so patients should not be subjective, they need to go to medical facilities as soon as possible to be examined and treated according to the correct regimen. In particular, people should not arbitrarily buy medicine to treat at home, which can easily make the disease worse and cause unfortunate complications" - said a representative of the Center for Disease Control of Ninh Binh province.
