A roller is a handheld device that has a drum-like structure surrounded by tiny needles, typically 0.2 to 2.5 millimeters in length. When the roller is rolled over the skin or scalp, it creates micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural healing process. This promotes collagen and elastin production and increases blood flow, says plastic surgeon Dr. Shweta Mishra.
According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology Online, the roller is effective in treating hair loss and promoting hair regrowth. The micro-injuries created by the roller on the scalp help increase blood flow to the hair follicles, providing nutrients and oxygen needed for hair growth.
Dr. Mishra adds that after 8 to 12 weeks of using the roller combined with a proper hair care routine, hair loss and baby hair will be reduced.
According to a study published in the Journal of Biomedical Microdevices, using a derma roller for hair growth is a long process. So patience and consistency are key when using a derma roller for hair growth.
