From now until the Lunar New Year and immediately after Tet, the blood demand for treatment will increase when thousands of patients need to have stable blood transfusions to be able to celebrate Tet and reunite with their families. The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion calls on the community to join hands to donate an additional 10,000 units of blood during Tet, of which blood type O needs at least 5,000 units.
It is estimated that in February 2026 alone, the Institute needs about 40,000 units of blood to supply more than 180 hospitals in the Northern region and support some localities in the South. However, due to the long Tet holiday, blood donation points at agencies, units and residential communities will not be able to be organized continuously for about 2 weeks (from February 12 to the end of February 24).
Although the blood donation point at the Institute still maintains operations throughout Tet, the amount of blood received is forecast to be difficult to meet the increasing treatment needs.
The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion said that many patients who have to be treated and receive periodic blood transfusions still call the pre-Tet treatment period "going shopping for Tet". Because for them, Tet is not a lavish feast, but just hoping to have enough blood for treatment, enough health to not miss the moment of family reunion.
Each unit of blood donated is an additional life opportunity for patients. It is also a priceless Tet gift that the community gives to those who are fighting against illness every day," a representative of the Institute shared.
The Institute earnestly calls on everyone who is healthy to participate in blood donation before, during and immediately after Tet, and at the same time mobilize relatives, friends, and colleagues to join hands.
