Rapidly performing multiple organ retrieval and transplantation from brain-dead people

Lệ Hà |

Recently, doctors from the 108 Military Central Hospital supported the 103 Military Hospital in organizing the retrieval of 7 organs from brain-dead donors.

Previously, Military Hospital 103 received a 20-year-old male patient who was in a deep coma due to a severe traumatic brain injury on the 5th day. After the efforts of the medical team, the patient was diagnosed with brain death. With a charitable heart, the family representative agreed to donate the victim's tissues and organs to save the lives of many other patients with serious illnesses.

Upon receiving the information, 108 Central Military Hospital immediately sent experts to consult online with 103 Military Hospital to develop a plan for multi-tissue and organ transplantation that is safe, rigorous, scientific, and in compliance with professional regulations.

After more than 1 hour of consultation, the expert team from the Central Military Hospital arrived at Military Hospital 103. The doctors removed the heart, lungs, liver, 2 kidneys and 2 corneas from the brain-dead donor, and participated in transferring direct liver transplant techniques and supporting post-operative resuscitation at Military Hospital 103.

After the multi-organ transplant, the recipients are making good progress. For the liver transplant, the patient was awake, had the trachea removed, and could speak normally immediately after the surgery.

To date, 108 Military Central Hospital has performed nearly 250 liver transplants, nearly 500 kidney transplants, 02 heart transplants, 04 lung transplants and 04 limb transplants. The hospital has become the number 1 liver transplant center in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. With the number of transplants of 50 cases/year, it strives to reach 100 cases/year in the coming period.
