Organ donation - a noble act that saves many lives

On October 24, Phu Tho General Hospital performed organ donation surgery to save the lives of two kidney failure patients.

Previously, a 17-year-old boy had a traffic accident and was diagnosed with multiple injuries and severe traumatic brain injury by doctors and was transferred to Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital.

Due to the patient's severe condition, brain death, despite emergency surgery and intensive resuscitation measures, the patient did not survive.

After three evaluations, the doctors advised the family to donate organs to save many other patients. Although this was a difficult decision, the patient's family immediately agreed.

The hospital has coordinated with the family and relevant authorities to complete the necessary legal procedures for organ donation of brain-dead people.

Along with that, the Hospital also urgently coordinated with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and experts from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital to review and search for people eligible for organ transplants from this donor.

Two kidneys were transplanted to two patients with kidney failure at Phu Tho General Hospital, while the heart and liver were transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for transplant to two patients with liver and heart failure.

Thanks to the careful preparation and professionalism of the surgical, anesthesia and resuscitation teams of the two hospitals, the process of removing the kidney, heart and liver from the donor was quick and smooth. Before the surgery, all the doctors and nurses bowed their heads in gratitude to the young man.

According to initial assessment, the transplanted organs were of good quality, and the two kidneys were immediately transplanted to two compatible patients at Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital.

The heart and liver were transferred in time to be transplanted into two patients at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

Currently, all 4 patients who received heart, liver, and kidney transplants in the first hours after transplant have good prognosis.

Previously, on June 20, Phu Tho General Hospital also performed the first surgery to remove organs from a brain-dead donor and transfer them to Hue Central Hospital for transplant to two kidney failure patients.

This is the second organ donation from a brain-dead person performed by Phu Tho General Hospital in 2024. The event marks an important step forward in the efforts of the Phu Tho Health sector to participate in the organ donation network.

The hospital's organ transplants not only affirm its strong commitment to organ donation but also contribute to increasing the source of donated organs, opening up many valuable life opportunities for waiting patients.
