Helicopter brings bone marrow shock patient from Son Ca island to mainland for treatment

Ho Chi Minh City - Military Hospital 175 said that it had just rescued a patient with spinal shock due to severe spinal injury from Son Ca island to the mainland by helicopter.

The patient's name is P.V. M (born in 1985, from Quang Tri province) is working at Son Ca island. At about 10:20 am on July 14, during work, the patient was unfortunately hit by a mold falling from above, directly pressing on his nape.

The patient was taken to Son Ca Island Clinic for emergency treatment at 10:30 am on the same day. At the time of admission, the patient was awake, in good contact, Glasgow 15 points, hemodynamics stable; however, he was completely paralyzed, lost sensation and mobility from the chest area down, sphincter disorder and loss of carotid reflex.

Faced with the serious condition of the patient, at 2:30 PM on July 14, Son Ca Island Clinic organized a remote professional consultation with Military Hospital 175. Through medical history investigation and clinical evaluation, doctors diagnosed the patient with spinal shock, spinal cord injury - cervical spine, monitoring fracture, dislocation of vertebrae C6-C7; complications of complete paralysis of both legs after a work accident.

According to the assessment of the professional council, this is an extremely urgent emergency case. The patient is at risk of severe progression due to progressive pulp edema, respiratory failure and life-threatening complications, so it needs to be transported by air to the mainland as soon as possible to take advantage of the "golden time" for intervention and intensive treatment.

Pursuing the order of the Ministry of National Defense, at 8:30 PM on July 14, helicopters of Southern Helicopter Company, Brigade 18, and the Air Emergency Team of Military Hospital 175 took off from Tan Son Nhat airport to Son Ca island to perform their duties.

During the waiting time for the flight, doctors of Military Hospital 175 continued to provide remote professional support, guiding Son Ca Island Clinic to closely monitor the patient's neurological, respiratory and hemodynamic conditions according to the agreed protocol.

When approached, the emergency team recorded that the patient was awake and in contact. The emergency team quickly fixed the cervical spine with specialized equipment, pain relief, supported and stabilized the respiratory and hemodynamic conditions, and then transported the patient back to the mainland for continued intensive treatment.

Immediately upon admission, Military Hospital 175 urgently organized a multi-specialized consultation, performed necessary tests and imaging diagnosis to fully determine the extent of the injury, thereby deploying appropriate emergency and treatment plans. Currently, the patient is being monitored, treated and actively treated at Military Hospital 175.
