On January 6, Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital said that the unit had simultaneously deployed 2 complex organ transplants including heart and liver transplants in 2 operating rooms operating in parallel, performed on the night of January 4.
The patient with heart transplant is a 61-year-old man, suffering from dilated myocardial disease for more than 10 years, progressing to late-stage heart failure, multiple severe heart rhythm disorders, requiring defibrillators and maintaining hemodynamics with high-dose vasopressors. In a condition of progressive heart failure and responding to limited medical treatment, heart transplantation is the only treatment option.

At the same time, the liver transplant was indicated for a 16-year-old patient with advanced chronic liver disease, who had transitioned to terminal cirrhosis and acute liver failure, accompanied by severe blood clotting disorders, jaundice, abdominal distension and liver coma, directly threatening life if not transplanted in time.
Through the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, a suitable organ source has been coordinated for 2 transplants. Immediately upon receiving the information, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital coordinated with People's Hospital 115 and a professional team to receive and perform organ removal according to the correct procedure. The heart and liver removal processes were deployed simultaneously, ensuring technical requirements, preservation and transportation, and strictly controlling the time of cold ischemia before transplantation.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Dinh - Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital, the heart transplant surgery took place smoothly. At 6:30 PM, the donated heart was transplanted into the patient's chest. At about 9:30 PM, the transplanted heart began to beat again with the first beats, regularly and stably, and the early hemodynamic parameters after transplantation improved significantly.
In the liver transplant case, according to Dr. Tran Cong Duy Long - Deputy Head of the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Department of Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital, the special point of the transplant is the liver division technique according to an improved method, allowing to separate a donated liver into two intact right and left liver grafts so that enough can be transplanted for 2 adults.

By midnight on the same day, the liver graft was re-irrigated well, starting bile secretion, and liver hemodynamic and biochemical indicators showed positive initial response, marking the initial success of the surgery.
From the act of organ donation at People's Hospital 115, not only 2 patients at Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital were given life chances, but other tissues and organs were also coordinated in a timely manner to many medical facilities.
