When the abdominal pain and tightness appeared more and more clearly and affected daily life, the female patient came for examination at the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Here, doctors determined that the patient had a very large ovarian tumor, developing silently for a long time.
The patient was unmarried, with a slightly thick physique, so the abnormal increase in abdomen size for many months did not cause family suspicion. The patient claimed that she was just "belly fat", so she did not go for a health check-up.
Only when a feeling of tightness, prolonged abdominal pain, and more difficult living conditions appeared, did the patient be admitted to the hospital for examination.
Through ultrasound and paraclinical tests, doctors discovered an ovarian tumor with a diameter of about 30cm, almost occupying the entire abdominal cavity and compressing many surrounding organs.
Dr. Mai Trong Dung - Head of the Department of Gynecology and Surgery said that this is a typical case of gynecological diseases progressing silently, initial symptoms are unclear, so they are easily overlooked.
Because the patient is still very young, doctors not only aim to completely remove the tumor but also must try to preserve maximum reproductive and endocrine functions in the long term.
After consultation, the doctors decided to choose laparoscopic surgery, although this is a difficult technique for large tumors.
During the surgery, endoscopic images showed that the tumor had occupied almost the entire abdominal cavity, significantly limiting the operating space. The team had to puncture and draw fluid in the tumor carefully to ensure safety. A total of about 10 liters of fluid were removed from the patient's body.
Notably, doctors performed an immediate biopsy right during surgery to assess the nature of the tumor. When the results showed that the lesion was benign, the team continued to dissect meticulously to completely remove the tumor but still retain the healthy ovary.
According to Dr. Mai Trong Dung, for young patients, preserving fertility is always an important priority if professional conditions permit. However, this requires surgeons to carefully calculate each operation to both ensure safety and minimize damage to healthy tissues.
After surgery, the patient's health stabilized and post-operative monitoring continued.
