Dr. Vu Tuan Cuong, Director of the Ministry of Health, said that this is the first dengue vaccine licensed in Vietnam. Qdenga, a dengue vaccine produced by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is more than 80% effective in protecting against all four serotypes of the dengue virus. The vaccine is intended for children aged 4 and older, with a schedule of two injections, three months apart.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dac Phu, former Director of the Ministry of Health, said that Vietnam is currently circulating all four types of Dengue virus that cause dengue fever, of which the main circulating virus types are DEN-1 and DEN-2. Type DEN-2 is often associated with severe cases of dengue fever and epidemics, as well as being the major cause of deaths related to dengue fever.
People who have had dengue fever still need to be vaccinated to prevent reinfection and reduce the risk of complications. Currently, Vietnam has a dengue vaccine that protects against all four types of dengue virus that cause the disease.
People from 4 years old need to get two shots 3 months apart, no need to test before vaccination. The vaccine is not given during pregnancy, women need to complete the vaccination schedule before pregnancy, preferably 3 months, minimum 1 month. People who have had dengue fever should postpone vaccination for at least 6 months from the date of diagnosis. In your child's case, you can go to the vaccination service center for vaccination advice.
With the dengue vaccine, there is another effective solution to support the prevention of dengue fever. This vaccine will help reduce the risk of dengue fever and especially reduce the risk of severe disease, meaning that if you get sick after vaccination, the disease will be mild. However, vaccination does not mean you will not get sick.
The risk of dengue fever remains high due to the presence of the pathogen and Aedes mosquitoes in the community. To optimize the effectiveness of the vaccine and protect the under-aged population, it is necessary to minimize the existing risk by maintaining and regularly implementing traditional, integrated and effective measures - vector control, mosquito and larva control.
Experts say that dengue fever is no longer a cyclical disease, but has a high incidence rate every year due to climate change, environment and population characteristics. Therefore, this is a disease that must be focused on prevention and control.
