Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuc and Mr. Nguyen Huu Dang in Thuong Thanh 2 village, Binh Minh commune only have one child, Nguyen Huu Duy.
Since birth, Duy has had a cleft palate, a difficult family situation because his parents are unemployed, Duy's life is even more precarious due to illness, and the road to school is also full of hardships...
Currently, Duy's whole family lives in an old house built many years ago, which has now deteriorated with time. Living space is cramped, simple, and there are no valuable items in the house...
Born unhealthy, Duy's childhood was associated with separate meals and many lengthy medical examinations. Due to his medical characteristics, his eating habits were limited, his daily meals were mainly thin porridge, soft rice or cooked food.
Duy's family is not eligible for social allowances, the whole family depends on Mr. Dang's precarious income, whoever hires him to do whatever he wants. Over 50 years old, working hard for many years, living in hardship, Mr. Dang is no longer agile; however, he accepts any job he calls, from construction worker, porter... Ms. Thuc is currently in poor health, often sick, only doing odd jobs around the house to earn extra money to buy bunches of vegetables, kilograms of rice. From Mr. Dang's meager, fluctuating income, the whole family earns every penny to cover all living expenses, tuition, food, medicine.
Ms. Thuc said that every time she takes Duy to the hospital for examination, the family has to worry about about 4 million VND - a very large amount compared to their ability. “Many times I have run around borrowing money everywhere to have enough money for my child to go for examination. For us, long-term treatment for our child is always a constant worry. Knowing that we have to follow the hospital, follow the doctor, but each time we go, the whole family adds a burden. Many times my child comes to the examination schedule but cannot afford the money, I only dare to buy extra medicine for my child to take for a while...”, the mother said choked up.
Despite difficult family circumstances, Mr. Dang and Mrs. Thuc have never thought about letting their children drop out of school. For them, having their children go to school is the most important thing. “Our children have been disadvantaged due to illness, if they are not educated, they will be even more miserable later. We are only worried that we will no longer be able to accompany our children...”, Mr. Dang said sadly.

Understanding his family circumstances, Duy is very obedient and self-disciplined. He tries to eat and live according to the doctor's instructions to maintain his health. On days when he is tired, eating becomes even more difficult, but he still tries to go to class regularly. Being able to go to school is a rare joy for Duy amidst many worries.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Ba Son - Head of Thuong Thanh 2 hamlet, Binh Minh commune, Hanoi City said that Nguyen Huu Duy's family situation is one of the particularly difficult cases in the locality. "Duy's family is not eligible for social assistance, while the cost of treating cleft palate deformity each time is up to millions of VND, exceeding the family's ability," Mr. Son shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ba Son, the locality has regularly grasped the situation, encouraged and supported the family within its capacity. However, due to Duy's malformation requiring long-term treatment and high costs, current support only helps the family withstand in the short term. "We really hope to receive attention, sharing and joint help from the community so that Duy has the opportunity to be treated according to the correct regimen, soon stabilize his health and continue his studies," Mr. Son said.
