In the middle of Thuong Thanh 2 village (Binh Minh commune, Hanoi city), a small family is quietly facing a series of days full of tears since the disease stroke struck. The house, which was originally peaceful, has now become empty, because most of the time, the two mothers and daughters have to tie their lives to the hospital.
The mother is Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong (born in 1983), and the only son is Nguyen Minh Quan (20 years old). Before getting sick, Minh Quan was a healthy young man, studying diligently. In 2024, he passed the university entrance exam, carrying many dreams about the future ahead... However, when the lecture hall door had not yet opened, the event suddenly closed all plans.
Disaster struck the family on May 29, 2024, while living normally, Minh Quan suddenly felt severe back pain, numbness, and tremors. Only a few days later, Quan fell into a state of paralysis of half his body, diagnosed with acute C myelitis, forced to be hospitalized for long-term treatment. "At that time, my child was still able to sit, but a few days later he couldn't stand up anymore," Ms. Huong said choked up.
Since then, Minh Quan's medical journey has been a series of days at major hospitals. He used to be treated for 7 months at Bach Mai Hospital, then transferred to Viet Duc Hospital for more than 1 month. Currently, Quan is being treated and practicing rehabilitation at Hanoi Rehabilitation Hospital, with a total treatment time of more than 19 months.
Reporters came to meet Ms. Huong and Minh Quan at Hanoi Rehabilitation Hospital on a cold day. In the hospital room, Minh Quan lay motionless on the bed, all personal activities needed support. The dream of returning to university lecture halls for me now only dared to be kept in mind. “I just hope to be able to walk, to be able to help my mother, and then continue to go to school later like my friends,” Minh Quan shared.
For nearly 2 years, Minh Quan has gone through a difficult treatment journey. At Viet Duc Friendship Hospital alone, he had to undergo surgery twice and undergo 3 cleansing interventions due to serious spinal cord damage. After each treatment session, there are months of hard rehabilitation, when the body cannot control movement. Currently, Minh Quan is still paralyzed on one side of his body, having to practice small movements...
The burden of making a living and taking care of her child rests entirely on the shoulders of the mother. Previously, Ms. Huong worked as a clothes delivery worker for a store, earning about 6 million VND/month. Since her son became ill, she almost completely quit her job to be on duty to take care of her child, so her income has seriously decreased.
Ms. Huong herself is not in good health, but due to difficult circumstances, all expenses must be focused on her child's treatment. The family is not eligible for social assistance, while treatment, medicine, and travel costs each month amount to tens of millions of dong. Not to mention, Minh Quan's father goes to work far away, rarely returns home and also does not have regular support. The life of the two mothers and children is therefore even more difficult...
In the midst of long days in the hospital, the mother still silently supports the burden, nurturing a faint hope that one day, her son can stand up on his own, step onto the unfinished path of study...
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Ba Son - Head of Thuong Thanh 2 hamlet, Binh Minh commune - said that Ms. Huong's family is one of the particularly difficult cases in the locality. Her son is paralyzed on one side of his body, requiring long-term treatment, while the mother's health is weak and income is unstable. The locality has paid attention and encouraged her within its capacity, but the treatment costs are too high, far exceeding the family's ability.
According to Mr. Son, for Minh Quan to have the opportunity to continue treatment and recovery, it is very necessary to have the joint efforts and sharing from the community. "Each help at this time is extremely valuable, helping the family overcome the difficult period and hold on to hope for the future of the child," Mr. Son said.
