At the age of 67, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huy (born in 1959, in Binh Vong village, Thuong Tin commune, Hanoi) is living in difficult days when prolonged illness seriously impairs her health. Once a hardworking woman, doing all kinds of jobs to raise her three children to adulthood, now she only stays around the house, all activities need someone to support her.
In previous years, Mrs. Huy was a farmer, doing whatever anyone hired her to do, from farming to other manual jobs to cover living expenses. Despite the hardship, she still tried to take care of her children's education, hoping that her children would have a more stable life than her. However, the unexpected illness that struck caused the family to fall into a situation of accumulated difficulties.
In 2015, Ms. Huy discovered a thyroid tumor and had to undergo surgery at Thanh Nhan Oncology Hospital. After surgery, Ms. Huy had to undergo long-term treatment, costing about 70 million VND - a large amount of money for the family. To have money for treatment, relatives had to borrow everywhere, from relatives and neighbors to bank loans.
It was thought that after the surgery, Ms. Huy's health would stabilize, but by 2020, her condition continued to develop complicatedly. She often had headaches, numbness and stiffness in her limbs, nosebleeds, and rapid physical exhaustion. The family took her to Military Hospital 103 for emergency treatment. After examination, doctors diagnosed her with a brain tumor and had to undergo urgent surgery. She was hospitalized for nearly a month, the treatment cost amounted to nearly 100 million VND. Once again, the family had to run around borrowing money, bearing a large debt...

After two major surgeries, Ms. Huy's health deteriorated significantly. She was often tired, had difficulty walking, and could only stay at home. Everyday personal activities had to be supported by her husband and children. Ms. Huy's husband is also old, so he only provides partial support...
Ms. Huy's two older children have their own families, but their family circumstances are difficult, so they cannot support their parents. Currently, Ms. Huy's care is mainly taken care of by her youngest son, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh (born in 1992). Previously, Mr. Huy went to work, since his mother fell ill, he had to quit his job to stay at home to take care of her.
My mother is constantly sick, many times looking at my mother lying in one place makes me feel very sorry. There are days when my mother is too sick to sleep, I also stay up all night. I am worried because I don't have a stable income to take care of my mother, but leaving my mother without anyone to take care of me is also unacceptable...", Mr. Tuan Anh choked up sharing.
Mr. Tuan Anh added that what he wants most at this time is not something big, just hoping that his mother will have more health, less sickness so that the family can ease some of the burden. "Just need my mother to be less sick and live a little more normally, my family will be very happy," Mr. Tuan Anh said.
Not only taking care of his mother, Mr. Tuan Anh also supports all family expenses with his father, Mr. Nguyen Van Luoc (born in 1953). Mr. Luoc himself also suffers from bone and joint disease, lung disease, and is weak, only able to do light work when he is still able.
The cost of medicine for Ms. Huy is about 700,000 VND per month, not including re-examinations. Although she receives an allowance of about 1 million VND/month, this amount is only enough to hold on for a while, while the debt borrowed from previous treatments has not been fully repaid.
Old age, illness, no longer able to work, Ms. Huy's life now completely depends on her family. Meanwhile, unstable income, plus the burden of debt after many treatments make everything even more difficult.

Amidst those hardships, what the family hopes for is nothing more than to have more conditions to continue treatment, so that the mother can alleviate the pain and so that the children can reduce some of the burden weighing heavily on their shoulders.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Luong Khac Hung - Head of Binh Vong village, Thuong Tin commune - said that Ms. Huy's family is in difficult circumstances in the locality, and for many years has had to bear large medical expenses.
We really hope philanthropists will pay attention and support so that the family has more conditions to overcome difficulties," Mr. Hung shared.
