In the old level 4 house where Ms. Vu Thi Thom and her 3 children are staying in Tan Hoi residential group, Tay Hoa Lu ward, Ninh Binh province, there is always a heavy atmosphere. Ms. Vu Thi Thom, born in 1988, is currently a worker at Thanh Cong Automobile Services and Infrastructure Joint Stock Company, known as one of the particularly difficult circumstances at the Company.
She herself is a single mother, working alone to raise her children to study, the life of her and her children was already difficult, now it is even more difficult when her eldest daughter Vu Truc Quynh, born in 2012, has cancer; her youngest son Nguyen Minh Triet was also diagnosed with thalassemia.
Ms. Thom shared that an incident struck her family at the end of 2025. At that time, Quynh suddenly had severe abdominal pain and vomited continuously. Thinking that her child only had a common digestive disorder, she took her child to a nearby clinic for examination. However, after examination, the doctor discovered that she had an ovarian tumor and requested urgent transfer to Ninh Binh Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
The subsequent test results made her break down when the doctor concluded that Quynh had stage 3 ovarian cancer. Immediately after that, she was transferred to K Hospital for treatment.
Currently, she has undergone surgery to remove one ovary and 4 rounds of chemotherapy. Her body is exhausted, some days she has a high fever, painful to the point of not being able to sleep. Looking at her struggling, I don't know what to do but hug her and cry" - Ms. Thom said choked up.
Also according to Ms. Thom, all treatment costs for Quynh had to be borrowed from relatives, friends and neighbors. "I myself work as a worker with an income of about 7 million VND/month, but I only save money to cover daily meals for the 3 mothers and children. Now the amount of treatment for the child has reached hundreds of millions of VND, many times looking at my child in pain, I can only cry because I can't find money anywhere to take her to the hospital" - Ms. Thom said sadly in tears.
The pain of Ms. Thom and her 3 children did not stop there when recently, Nguyen Minh Triet was also diagnosed with thalassemia. Because her child is still too young, he cannot receive intensive treatment but must be maintained with medication and regular monitoring.
Just thinking that my daughter is sick is already the ultimate pain, now even my son is sick. I am really helpless" - Ms. Thom said in tears.
Since her 2 children developed the disease, she has often had to quit her job to be on duty to take care of her children at the hospital, so her income has also decreased, and the life of the 3 mothers and children is even more deadlocked. Currently, the whole family lives in the dilapidated house of her elderly grandparents, without a pension or stable income.
According to Mr. Lam Van Dien - head of Tan Hoi residential group, Ms. Thom's family is in particularly difficult circumstances in the locality. She alone raises two young children and is already struggling, now both children are suffering from dangerous diseases, making the situation even more tragic.
Ms. Thom's dream is to hope to have money for treatment and regain life for her children. But for that dream to come true, she really needs the sharing hands of the community.
