LD26138: Old widowed mother doing all kinds of jobs to raise kidney dialysis children, exhausted by hip replacement costs

Her husband died early, the elderly mother did all kinds of jobs to raise her kidney-failed son. Now the unexpected accident has forced him to have a hip replacement, and the family situation is even more exhausted.

At the age of 32, Mr. Nguyen The Hung is going through difficult months in the hospital bed. More than 3 years of hemodialysis, his health is increasingly depleted, recently he had to have a hip replacement after an accident, making the already difficult life of the two mothers and children even more deadlocked.

Sitting next to her son's bed, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh could not hide her worry. After her husband passed away in 2011, the family's life became increasingly difficult. In 2015, when Hung's paternal grandparents passed away one after another, she decided to go from Phu Tho to Hanoi to work as a hired laborer to earn income to raise her son.

In the countryside, just relying on rice fields is not enough to live on. I came to Hanoi to rent a room, doing whatever anyone hires me to do, from cleaning to seasonal work. For three years now, my child has not been able to work anymore, so I have to bear the burden alone," Ms. Minh shared.

According to relatives, kidney failure has been with Hung since he was young. At the age of 5, he suffered severe burns after an accident related to lime. During treatment, doctors discovered that his urinary tract was damaged, affecting his bladder and kidneys. Since then, Hung has had to live with kidney disease for many years.

Although his health was not good, he still tried to finish high school and then study at the Medical College with the desire to have a stable job in the future to help his mother. However, his illness became increasingly serious, forcing him to drop out of school. After that, Hung used to work as a worker, then studied jewelry, but all were unfinished when kidney failure progressed to the final stage.

The incident continued more than a month ago. While taking his 90-year-old grandmother on a motorbike, because his body was too weak, Hung could not keep his balance, causing both to fall. The collision caused him to fracture his femoral neck and had to undergo hip replacement surgery.

After surgery, Hung continued to face a series of complications. He suffered from pneumonia, edema all over his body, requiring intensive treatment and emergency blood filtration. He is still in the hospital, his legs are plastered, and all activities depend on the care of his mother.

According to Dr. Nguyen Hai Nam - Head of the Artificial Kidney Department, Nam Thang Long Hospital, patient The Hung is a case with particularly difficult circumstances. He has been on dialysis for many years, is very weak, severely ischemic and is undergoing treatment combining periodic dialysis with intensive resuscitation after surgery.

The family only has two mothers and children. The patient is no longer able to work but still has to be attached to dialysis for life. Although health insurance has supported most of the treatment costs, patients still need additional funding for medicine, nutrition, iron supplementation, protein supplementation and many other care items to maintain health," said Dr. Nam.

Although kidney failure patients have been covered by health insurance for most of the blood filtration costs, to maintain physical condition and improve quality of life, patients still need many other supports such as medicine, nutrition, iron supplements, protein, red blood cells and support products as prescribed.

“For patient Hung, his health is currently very weak, and his circumstances are particularly difficult. The patient is no longer able to work but still has to maintain dialysis for life. We hope philanthropists can join hands to support patients to have more conditions for treatment, improve nutrition and overcome this difficult period,” the doctor said.

On the hospital bed, Mr. Hung is still fighting against illness every day. Next to him is a mother over 60 years old, still diligently doing all kinds of jobs to have money to raise her child and maintain treatment. Amidst the accumulated difficulties, what the two mothers and daughters want most at this time is for Hung's health to be more stable to continue the long journey ahead.
