LD26166: Labour accident robs young mechanic of light

A sudden work accident caused a young man in his prime to lose one eye, closing off unfinished plans and worries about the road ahead.

Mr. Huynh Van Tuy (born in 1997) residing in Hamlet 5, Vinh Thuan Dong Commune (Can Tho City) once left his hometown to Binh Duong to work as a mechanic with the desire to have a stable income to take care of his own life. However, an unexpected work accident caused him to permanently lose one eye.

According to Mr. Tuy's account, while working at the mechanical workshop, an iron bar suddenly burst strongly, flying straight into his eye, causing him pain and collapse. Colleagues immediately took him to the emergency room at Binh Duong Provincial General Hospital. However, due to the severe injury, he was urgently transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital for further treatment.

Doctors determined that Mr. Tuy had a ruptured eyeball, severe damage, and had to undergo two consecutive surgeries to save the rest of his eye. Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses to save him, he still could not maintain the vision of the injured eye.

In just a short time, the treatment cost exceeded the capacity of a young mechanic. Emergency, surgery, medicine, accommodation and travel costs amounted to more than 20 million VND. Without health insurance, all the money was managed by Mr. Tuy himself with his savings and borrowed money.

I just thought about trying to go to work to have a stable life, unexpectedly in just a moment I lost one eye. I just hoped to recover soon to go to work to support myself, gradually pay off the debts borrowed for treatment," Mr. Tuy choked up sharing.

After being discharged from the hospital, Mr. Tuy was forced to return to his hometown to recuperate because he was no longer able to continue living in Binh Duong. Losing one eye also made his mechanical work - a profession he has been attached to for many years - extremely difficult.

His family circumstances are also not very well-off. Mr. Tuy's father, Mr. Huynh Van No (born in 1975), works as a security guard, and his mother, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Chuc (born in 1980), is a worker. Parents have been divorced for many years, each in a different place, so they cannot support their son much. Mr. Tuy's younger brother also works as a mechanic with unstable income.

These days, all living expenses, medicine and re-examination are a burden for Mr. Tuy. No longer having the health he had before, income is interrupted while the debt for medical treatment is still there, making his life increasingly difficult.

Talking to a reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Hoang Ba, Head of Hamlet 5, Vinh Thuan Dong Commune, Can Tho City, said that Mr. Huynh Van Tuy's family is very difficult, and Mr. Tuy is a hardworking and diligent worker. The unexpected work accident caused him to lose one eye, seriously affecting his health as well as his working ability.

I really hope philanthropists will pay attention and support so that he can have conditions for treatment and soon stabilize his life," Mr. Hoang Ba shared.
