Meeting Ms. Phan Thi Viet Chinh at the Intensive Care - Poison Control Department, Hanoi Children's Hospital, just a few questions about her son's health condition, Ms. Chinh burst into tears because she felt sorry for her son.
Ms. Chinh's son is baby Hoang Bao Nam (6 years old). He has had epilepsy and cerebral palsy since he was young and left many serious sequelae, seriously affecting his health and daily activities.
Ms. Chinh said that her child's health is weak, so she often encounters respiratory problems such as bronchial pneumonia, pneumonia, and has to be hospitalized and use a ventilator many times.
For the past 6 years, her child's frequent hospitalization has caused many difficulties for the family. Previously, each time she was hospitalized for treatment for about 1-2 months, her health was stable, and she was brought home again. However, this treatment period lasted nearly 4 months and was the longest hospital stay for the baby.
Normally when the child is at home, she will take care of it, so my husband and I can still go to work. But for nearly 4 months now, when the child has to be hospitalized, my husband and I have to take turns taking care of the child, during the week when I go to work, my husband takes care of me, and at the weekend I take leave to go to the hospital with the child," Ms. Chinh shared.
Speaking about income, Ms. Chinh said that her fixed salary is about 6.5 million VND/month. If adding allowances, overtime and overtime, her income is about 9 million VND/month. Her husband works as a freelance mechanic, so his income is unstable.
With this income level, it is not easy to cover the living expenses of a normal family, while her family has 6 people and there are often people who are sick and have to be treated.
Throughout the years her child has been sick, treatment costs have been a heavy burden for the family. Both grandparents are old, and do not have the conditions to provide much support, so Ms. Chinh and her husband have to take care of themselves, with the help of relatives. This time, Bao Nam has been hospitalized for many days, and the family has had to pay 10-20 million VND many times.
The treatment road ahead is still long, while the cost is still a burden for the family. Therefore, Ms. Chinh hopes to receive sharing and support from kind hearts to have more conditions to continue treatment for her child.
The whole family struggles when many people are sick
Doctor Vu Thi Hoang Linh, Department of Intensive Care - Poison Control, Hanoi Children's Hospital - said that the patient is in a state of septic shock, sepsis, respiratory failure, pneumonia. Currently, the lungs tend to improve, but the patient still needs a ventilator.
With cerebral palsy and sequelae after encephalitis, the patient's ability to quit the ventilator is very low, and there is also a possibility of prolonged hospitalization.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen - Head of Lap Phuong village, Dai Xuyen commune, Hanoi city - said that Ms. Chinh's family belongs to a household in difficult circumstances in the locality.
According to Mr. Tuyen, Ms. Chinh's family has two children. In addition to Bao Nam, who is sick and often has to be hospitalized, the baby's older brother also has ADHD problems, often smashing things in the house. Bao Nam's grandfather is weak, has diabetes and high blood pressure, and cannot help his children and grandchildren.
“Previously, my grandmother both took care of the two grandchildren and the grandfather so that Ms. Chinh and her husband could go to work. But every time Bao Nam was sick and had to be hospitalized, the couple took turns taking time off work to go to the hospital to take care of their children, and my grandmother stayed at home to take care of the grandfather and the eldest grandson,” Mr. Tuyen said.
According to Mr. Tuyen, Ms. Chinh's family circumstances are still difficult, while Bao Nam has to be treated for a long time. He hopes the family will receive support to ease some of the burden in the process of caring for and treating their children.
