The WTA Tour's eight best women's players will compete in Saudi Arabia to close the 2024 season. Since 1972, the WTA Finals have been the season-ending event and the value of winning is second only to the four Grand Slams and the Summer Olympics.
Unlike any other tournament on the WTA Tour, the WTA Finals has a unique format for the eight players who qualify. Players can only qualify for the WTA Finals if they have played in at least eight WTA 1,000 or WTA 500 events.
At the 2024 WTA Finals, Iga Swiatek is the only player who has ever won. Of the remaining seven competitors, only two have reached the final before and two others are entering for the first time.
Martina Navratilova is the all-time WTA Finals champion with eight titles – the most successful ever. Steffi Graf and Serena Williams are second in the history books with five WTA Finals wins, Chris Evert four.
When will the 2024 WTA Finals take place?
The 2024 WTA Finals will begin on Saturday, November 2 and end a week later, on November 9. The WTA Tour has not confirmed the match times.
Competition format
At the WTA Finals, in both singles and doubles, players are divided into two groups of four. Players will play in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.
The WTA determines the rankings for the group stage based on the number of matches won by each player. If necessary, the WTA will consider the most matches and head-to-head records, and additional criteria such as number of games played, game and set winning percentage.
The group winner will face the second-placed player in the other group in the semi-finals. The semi-finals and final will then be played according to the standard system.
