Wimbledon is a grass court tournament in England, one of the four most prestigious Grand Slams in the tennis world. The organizers said that VAR technology will be applied on six main courts at Wimbledon 2026, including the central court and No. 1 court.
VAR has been introduced at ATP Tour tournaments last year and has been present at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
It allows players to complain about referee decisions - such as whether the ball bounced twice or not or whether the player touched the net or not. In addition, players can also complain multiple times, in unlimited quantities.
This can also apply to fouls that obstruct opponents, as in the case at Indian Wells last week when Jack Draper was accused by the referee of raising his hand in that ball and distracting opponent Daniil Medvedev at the important moment of the second set.
Last year, the Wimbledon organizers introduced the Electronic Referee System (ELC), ending the role of wire referees for 147 years before that.
Wimbledon also confirmed that it will put in use visual indicators to support electronic ball identification, after some fans complained that they could not know if the ball was in or out of the court without the biên referee on the court.
This year's Wimbledon tournament will start on June 29. In the 2025 season, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek will respectively win the men's and women's singles.
