The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) storm forecast bulletin said that at 2:00 a.m. on September 10, the center of the first low pressure area was located at about 25.8 degrees north latitude, 125.6 degrees east longitude, about 680 km northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, moving west. This low pressure area is likely to strengthen into a storm and will be named Ferdie.
"We continue to monitor the depression. Based on the latest data, we cannot rule out the possibility that it will become a typhoon as it moves westward and currently, there is still a small chance that it will make landfall," PAGASA weather forecaster Obet Badrina said.
If it makes landfall, it will be the sixth storm to hit the Philippines this year.
Meanwhile, the center of the second low pressure area was located at about 10.1 degrees north latitude, 147.8 degrees east longitude, about 2,415 km east of Eastern Visayas, outside the Philippine forecast area (PAR).
"Based on our latest data, this depression also has the potential to intensify into a storm and the possibility of it entering PAR cannot be ruled out," Obet Badrina added.
The low pressure is moving west and will intensify the southwest monsoon. Heavy rains are expected in Visayas and Mindanao on September 12-13.
According to Badrina, the low pressure and southwest monsoon continue to affect a large part of Luzon, causing rains, especially in the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley Region.
The southwest monsoon will also affect areas in Northern Luzon.
"For the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, we expect partly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms," he said.
PAGASA also warned of flooding in rivers and in provinces due to heavy rains .
Previously, PAGASA predicted that there could be 2 or 3 storms forming within or entering the PAR region this September.
In early September, the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Enteng (international name Yagi, Vietnam calls it Typhoon No. 3 ). The Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development said that 2.8 million Filipinos were affected by Typhoon Yagi, 20 people died, 20 people were injured and 26 people were missing.
