Regarding the developments in the fighting on the ground between Russia and Ukraine , Al Jazeera's September 9 Ukraine war update said that at least 3 people were killed and 1 person was injured after Russia attacked the village of Cherkaske in the Donetsk region with cluster bombs.
Two people were killed and four injured, including two children, in a Russian airstrike in Sumy province. Sumy borders Russia in northeastern Ukraine.
The death toll from a Russian missile attack on a military education institute in the Ukrainian city of Poltava has risen to 58 after three more people died from injuries.
Meanwhile, Russia announced that it had taken control of Novohrodivka, about 12 km from Pokrovsk. This is a strategically important town in eastern Ukraine. Novohrodivka had a population of 14,000 before the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out.
In its regular update, the Ukrainian General Staff also detailed fierce fighting across the Pokrovsk region, including Novohrodivka. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, 29 Russian attempts to advance were repelled, with seven clashes still ongoing.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that air defense units destroyed 15 of the 23 Russian attack drones and one guided missile. Two other drones and three missiles failed to hit their targets.
Romania and Latvia - NATO members and allies of Ukraine - said they were investigating airspace violations by Russian drones that crashed. NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said the incidents were "irresponsible and potentially dangerous".
Meanwhile, on the political and diplomatic front, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for new diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine "more quickly".
In an interview with ZDF television, Prime Minister Scholz said he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed on the need to hold a new peace conference with Russia's participation.
President Zelensky has appointed former arms production minister Oleksandr Kamyshin as an adviser on strategic issues, according to a decree published on the Ukrainian president's website. Kamyshin resigned as minister in charge of strategic industries in a major reshuffle of the Ukrainian government in recent days.
Regarding weapons, Al Jazeera's September 9 Ukraine war update said that President Zelensky once again called on Ukraine's allies to relax the conditions on using weapons provided by the West against targets inside Russia.
"In just one week, Russia has used more than 800 guided bombs, nearly 300 Shahed drones and more than 60 missiles of various types against our people," President Zelensky shared.
