The latest storm news from Xinhua News Agency said that super typhoon Yagi made its second landfall in Xuwen County, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, southern China, at around 10:20 p.m. on September 6.
China's 11th typhoon of the year has strengthened into a category 17 super typhoon , with maximum winds near the storm's eye reaching 208.8 km/h as the storm made its second landfall in Guangdong.
Previously, at around 4:20 p.m. on September 6, super typhoon Yagi made landfall in Wengtian district, Wenchang city, Hainan province, southern China, with winds of up to more than 234 km/h.
Currently, storm number 3 in the East Sea is moving in the Gulf of Tonkin and storm Yagi is forecast to make landfall in the northern provinces on the afternoon of September 7.
According to the latest storm information from the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), at 7:00 a.m. on September 7, Typhoon Yagi was 332 km east-southeast of Hanoi, Vietnam. The storm moved west-northwest at a speed of 22 km/h over the past 6 hours.
The JTWC's typhoon bulletin noted that Typhoon Yagi has picked up speed after leaving Hainan Island, currently estimated to be moving at around 20 km/h. There is no sign that Typhoon No. 3 in the South China Sea will slow down as the air thrust over China remains strong. Therefore, Typhoon No. 3 Yagi is expected to make landfall near Hai Phong, Vietnam within the next 12 hours.
After making landfall, Typhoon Yagi will brush north of Hanoi, eventually moving into northern Laos by the end of the forecast period.
According to the JTWC's forecast, due to favorable environmental conditions, Typhoon Yagi is expected to intensify in the next 6 to 12 hours before making landfall in Vietnam. Typhoon No. 3 Yagi is forecast to intensify to at least 215 km/h, or even higher, in the next 6 hours before making landfall in Vietnam.
The only factor that can affect the intensity of storm No. 3 is the short time of travel at sea and the fast speed of movement will somewhat limit the impact of the very high heat in the East Sea on the storm.
Upon landfall, Typhoon Yagi will initially maintain its intensity as it passes over the Red River Delta but will rapidly weaken after the first few hours over land. The storm is expected to dissipate completely in the northernmost part of Laos within 2 days.
According to the quick news about storm No. 3 released at 7:00 a.m. on September 7 by the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, storm Yagi is at about 20.4 degrees North latitude; 108.2 degrees East longitude, about 153km from the coast of Quang Ninh - Hai Phong. The strongest wind in storm No. 3 Yagi is at level 14 (150-166km/h), gusting to level 17. It is forecasted that in the next 3 hours, storm No. 3 Yagi will move in a west-northwest direction, at a speed of about 15-20km/h.
