Latvian Defense Minister resigns after Ukrainian UAV hit oil storage

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds resigned on May 10 after 2 Ukrainian drones attacked oil storage facilities.

Earlier the same day, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina asked Defense Minister Andris Spruds to resign, saying that anti-aircraft unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) systems had not been deployed quickly enough.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has appointed Latvian Army Colonel Raivis Melnis as the new Minister of Defense.

On May 7, Latvia and Lithuania called on NATO to strengthen air defense in the region after 2 drones flew across the Russian border and exploded at an oil storage facility in Latvia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed on social network X on May 10 that the drones were Ukrainian.

He said that these drones flew into Latvia because "Russian electronic warfare deliberately diverted Ukrainian drones from their targets in Russia".

In response to incidents related to drones, Ukraine is considering sending experts to help strengthen aviation security in the Baltic countries, Mr. Sybiha said on May 8.
