On October 9, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the self-governing island of Xinjiang, an area in the plateau west of Sichuan province (China), according to the China earthquake Network Center (CENC).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km at around 1:47 am on October 9 (local time), CENC said.
The center of the earthquake was determined near Tan Long district in the autonomous region of Cam Tu, at latitude 30.84 degrees North and longitude 99.86 degrees East.
Nam Tu has an area of about 150,000km2, an average altitude of about 3,500m, and is a sparsely populated area with about 1 million people living there.
This place borders Yunnan in the south and Tibet in the west, famous for its rugged mountain terrain, attracting many mountain climbers and nature explorers.
According to CENC, in the past 5 years, the area near the center of Tan Long district within a radius of 200km has recorded 23 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 richter or more.
Notably, the October 9 earthquake was stronger than any in the five years.
