District 7 Coast Guard said they are working with local authorities and many rescue vehicles at the scene after the Golden Ray capsized near St Simons sound in Brunswick, Georgia.
The Coast Guard said that there were 23 crew members and 1 pilot on board who were in distress. All crews, except for four members, were rescued safely from the ship.
"We are continuing to conduct rescue operations. They are continuing to do what they can. This is a complicated situation" - Senior Lieutenant of the tournament bride Llyod Heflin informed at a press conference on the afternoon of September 8.
Coast Guard officials said the rescue team discovered smoke and fire at the location of the capsized ship. The authorities assessed the situation as too dangerous to go inside the ship and search for 4 missing crew members. When the ship is stable, they will find a way to get in to find the four crew members still on board, said Captain John Reed, commander of the Charleston Coastal Coast Guard.
The Golden Ray was leaving Brunswich when it began to capsize on Sunday morning. The US Coast Guard said it received an emergency call at 2 a.m.
According to vesselfinder.com, the Golden Ray is flying the Marshall Islands flag. The owner of the ship is a Korean enterprise.
Brunswick Port is currently suspended and a safe area has been established in St Simons Sound. Ship are not allowed to operate within 800m of the Golden Ray.
Brunswick Port is a deep-water port in Goergia. This is one of the busiest seaports in the US in automobile transportation. Nearly 614,000 vehicles and heavy machinery units were transferred through the port in the 2019 fiscal year ended June 30, according to the AP.
