This information was revealed by a Lebanese military source to Reuters. The fire created a huge column of black smoke in the Lebanese capital just one month after a major explosion at Beirut port killed nearly 200 people.
Reuters sources said the cause of the explosion is still unclear.
According to the Independent, videos and images of the scene of the fire show a giant column of black smoke rolling high in the sky of the Lebanese capital.
The port workers were fleeing the fire area in panic, when they heard people screaming: "Let's go, everyone, let's go".
The Lebanese military determined the explosion at a terrain and oil depot in the Beirut Port freedom Zone. Firefighting goods warehouses and the army are trying to extinguish the fire, mobilizing even helicopters. The water-carried helicopter is seen flying across the city, according to the Independent.
Local media said the Lebanese army had begun evacuating people around the port where the fire occurred.
Previously, an explosion in Beirut on August 4 claimed 190 lives, injured 6,000 others and left 300,000 homeless.
The blast was determined to be caused by a 2,750-ton depot of amoni nitrate stored unsafely in a port warehouse for seven years. The entire Lebanese government has resigned following the shocking explosion.
