Former Brazilian President Imprisoned for Accusation of coup d'etat

On August 4, the Brazilian Supreme Court issued a house arrest warrant for former President Jair Bolsonaro before his trial on a coup plot.

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes was the one who issued the order to term Bolsonaro.

The main reason why Bolsonaro was called up to the bench was suspected of a plot to overthrow the 2022 election results after he lost to left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

judge Moraes order prohibits Bolsonaro from using a mobile phone or contacting individual customers, except for lawyers and those permitted by the court.

A media representative for Bolsonaro confirmed that he was under house arrest on the evening of August 4 (local time) at his home in Brazil. Local police were mobilized to monitor the order, and they were also responsible for seizing Bolsonaro's mobile phone.

Bolsonaro's lawyers have vowed to appeal, arguing that the former Brazilian president has not violated any court orders.

President Trump described the case as a "witch hunt," citing it as an excuse to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods. This tax rate will take effect on August 6.

The US State Department has condemned the house arrest warrant, saying Judge Moraes is using Brazilian institutions to limit the voice of the opposition and threaten democracy.

The US State Department also said it would "assign all those who assist and assist in the sanctions to take responsibility".
