The General Department of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR) released a video recording the special operation of the Timur unit in Sumy province. According to GUR, this force defeated more than 8 Russian companies, eliminated at least 334 soldiers from the battlefield and injured more than 550 people, blocking the enemy's advance.
The campaign comes as Russia has once controlled more than 160km2 in Sumy, but has recently encountered strong resistance, slowing progress. Kiev said it has reoccupied several villages. An analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows that Ukraine reclaimed 11km2 in July.
Ukraine said that Timur soldiers have traveled by low-altitude helicopters, fighting in the forest with rifle and machine gun, coordinating artillery and drones. Some scenes recorded the special forces moving by truck, launching drones from the field and destroying the opponent's position.
According to Russian military blogger Severnnyi, Russian forces in the village of Oleksiivka were surrounded, three sides bordering the river and the other side facing Ukrainian troops. GUR said the operation disrupted the enemy's supply of ammunition and supplies.
There is currently no information from the Russian military about the special operation of the Timur Special Forces.
The Timur Special Forces, one of the largest units of the GUR, specializes in ground and sea raids and amphibious assaults. The force has carried out many outstanding campaigns such as landing in Crimea in 2023, holding the Bakhmut supply route, re-taking the snake Island and destroying Russian armed forces in Sudan.
According to Mr. Ivan Stupak - a former security officer of Ukraine, Timur is equipped with modern weapons, specialized training in non-conventional warfare, and has a high fighting spirit. The force consists of more than 20 small groups, each group possessing its own skills, including Noboday and Raven specializing in drone warfare, along with the Bratstvo Battalion specializing in landing for sabotage deep in Russian territory.
In May, Timur launched a planned airstrike in Kharkov to prevent the enemy from crossing the Oskil River, destroying 600 underground tunnels, nine ammunition depots and eight crossing points, killing 439 Russian soldiers. The unit commander, nicknamed Timur, said they could operate anywhere with targets related to Russian intelligence.
