Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had just had an effective phone call with US President Donald Trump, focusing on discussing an end to the conflict, sanctions against Russia and a drone purchase and sale agreement between the two countries on August 5.
Mr Zelensky said President Trump was well aware of the situation of missile and drone attacks on Kiev and many other areas.
President Zelensky has given Russia until August 8 to reach a peace deal, otherwise they will face stronger sanctions, Zelensky said. A source in Washington said that US special missionary Steve Witkoff will meet with Russian leaders in Moscow on August 6-7.
In a video sent to the people, Mr. Zelensky affirmed that President Trump clearly understands the situation of war along the 1,000km long route in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Ukraine has repeatedly supported the US proposal for an immediate ceasefire and proposed solutions to realize this, including a complete stop of missile and drone attacks, especially on civilian and energy infrastructure. However, he accused Russia of repeatedly violating these proposals.
The US president has also threatened to impose a 100% tax on countries buying Russian oil, while preparing new sanctions packages. However, sources close to the Kremlin say that President Vladimir Putin will find it difficult to accept the letter.
In addition to the ceasefire issue, Mr. Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to sign a contract to sell drones to the US for about 30 billion USD, considering this one of the largest agreements between the two countries.
He also revealed that European partners have pledged to purchase more than $1 billion in US weapons to Ukraine under a new mechanism, helping to enhance defense capabilities and develop the domestic defense industry.
