On August 10 (local time), a 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Balikesir province, northwestern Turkey, killing 1 person and injuring 29 others.
According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the 81-year-old victim was taken out of the rubble by rescue forces but did not survive.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said the earthquake occurred at around 19:53, at a depth of 11km. The German Geological Research Center (GFZ) recorded an altitude of 6.19 degrees richter and a depth of 10km.
The earthquake was felt in many provinces, including Istanbul - Turkey's largest city. AFAD said a total of 16 buildings collapsed, while Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that search and rescue work had ended and there were no signs of further serious damage.
Local authorities said that most of the injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment, and their health is stable. The government is assessing the damage and supporting affected people.
