On August 1, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin will hand over two patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, in the context of Kiev under great pressure from increased airstrikes by Russia. Under the agreement with the US, Germany will be given priority to receive new patriot systems as a replacement after transferring them to Ukraine.
In the first phase, the German army will send more patriot launchers to Ukraine in the next few days. Next, the additional components of the system will be handed over within two to three months.
The US has pledged to supply new patriots to Germany at a faster pace than usual, thanks to which Berlin can both support Kiev and maintain its defense capabilities.
Ukraine's urgent need to strengthen air defense has become more urgent as Russia has stepped up airstrikes across the territory. patriot systems have proven their effective intercept of Russian ballistic missiles, contributing to the protection of many key areas.
Germany has previously transferred three patriot systems to Ukraine and said the additional sending would not affect its defense commitments in NATO.
