A Tsunami warning was issued for parts of Japan's east coast on December 8 after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit offshore, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake that occurred at 11:15 p.m. (local time) shook a large part of northeastern Japan. The center of the earthquake was about 70km from the coast of Aomori province and at a depth of about 53km.
The JMA warned that sunsines could reach nearly 3m in some coastal areas, including Iwate, Aomori and part of Hokkaido.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded a 7.6-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Misawa city.
