RT reported that the "Make Greenland Great Again" bill initiated by Representative Andy Ogles, with the support of 10 co-sponsors, stated that President Donald Trump has the authority to begin negotiations with Denmark immediately after taking office on January 20, 2025.
According to the bill, owning Greenland is "absolutely necessary" to ensure national security.
Donald Trump did not even rule out the use of military or economic pressure to achieve this goal. He said: "If Denmark really has a right to Greenland, they should give it up because we need it."
Greenland, located between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, is not only the world's largest island but also a center of US military strategy since World War II, with military bases and a ballistic missile early warning system.
More than 80% of the island is covered by ice, but Greenland possesses huge reserves of valuable resources such as gold, silver, copper, uranium and large oil potential. This makes the island an important economic and strategic target.
Greenland's leader, Mute Egede, said the island's people wanted independence rather than to be part of the US or Denmark. However, he expressed a willingness to "talk" to Mr Trump, but noted that Mr Trump's refusal to rule out the use of force was a "serious" issue.
A recent poll by the US research firm Patriot Polling found that about 57% of Greenlanders support President-elect Donald Trump’s idea of turning the island into a US territory. The poll, conducted with 416 respondents, coincided with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., making a personal visit to Greenland.
Greenland has been an autonomous Danish territory since 1979 and has the right to declare independence through a future referendum. "The desire for independence is something that every nation in the world understands," Egede stressed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Donald Trump is determined: "Greenland must belong to America, and we will do everything to make that happen."
