Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed the plan to put the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant into operation in 2026.
According to Mr. Bayraktar, Turkey aims to start electricity production from Akkuyu and gradually put all 4 reactors into operation, thereby meeting about 10% of the country's electricity demand.
The Turkish Energy Minister emphasized the goal of generating electricity from the first reactor this year, while deploying the operation of the remaining reactors according to the roadmap.
When all 4 reactors go into operation, we will meet about 10% of the electricity demand from this facility" - Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized, and said that the first unit of Akkuyu has completed 99% of the construction volume.
Referring to the plan to develop 2 more nuclear power plants in Sinop and Thrace, Mr. Bayraktar said that these projects will help Turkey become a "country with significant nuclear capabilities".
Akkuyu is Turkey's first nuclear power plant, built by Russian state-owned energy corporation Rosatom.
This nuclear project includes 4 units using the 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactor designed by Russia.
This is also the first project in the global nuclear power industry to be implemented under the "build-own-operate" model.
