On December 31, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Europe to affirm its interests more strongly to ensure peace and prosperity in 2026.
In his New Year's speech, Mr. Merz did not avoid harsh assessments, saying that the "terrible" conflict taking place right next to Europe is a direct threat to the freedom and security of the continent.
We are increasingly aware that Russia's actions in the past as well as now are part of a plan to impact the entire of Europe," Mr. Merz said, adding that Germany is facing daily sabotage, espionage and cyber attacks.
According to the German Chancellor, another challenge comes from protectionism in the global economy, as Europe's dependence on imported raw materials is increasingly being used as a political lever.
In an effort to restore an export-oriented economy that is facing difficulties, Germany is seeking to reduce dependence on China, while addressing global trade tensions and the impact of US President Donald Trump's tax policy.
Not only that, Germany is still affected by the lack of reforms and domestic investment for many years, according to economists, and is expected to only grow modestly this year after 2 years of decline.
Mr. Merz also mentioned the increasingly complex partnership with the United States - a country that has long been a pillar of security for Germany and Europe - since Mr. Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.
For us - Europeans - that means protecting ourselves and affirming our interests more strongly," he said.
However, the German Chancellor emphasized that Europe needs to be led by confidence, not fear, and must take the initiative.
This could be a decisive year for our country and for Europe. It could be the year when Germany and Europe, with new strength, reconnect the decades-old tradition of peace, freedom and prosperity.
Since taking office in May, Mr. Merz has played a leading role in European efforts to support Ukraine before Russia's military campaign. Berlin has also sharply increased defense spending since 2023 to show its willingness to shoulder greater responsibilities.
