President Donald Trump announced on December 22 that he approved plans to start building "a completely new, very large, and largest pair of armored ships we have ever built."
The US leader plans to soon build 10 ships, and in the long term up to 20-25 similar ships for the fleet.
The announcement was made by Mr. Trump along with drawings depicting the "Trump class" warship.
Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump affirmed: "Each of these will be the largest armored vehicle in the history of the United States, and the largest armored vehicle ever built in the world."
The announcement was attended by Minister of War Pete Hegseth, Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio and Minister of the Navy John Phelan.
As Commander-in-Chief, I am honored to announce that I have approved the plan for the Navy to start building two completely new, very large, and largest armored ships ever. There has never been a ship like this. These designs have been considered for a long time. The idea started in my first term, when I wondered why we didn't build the armored ships like before," President Donald Trump shared.
According to him, the US is in dire need of new ships because many are now "old, tired and outdated".
Navy Secretary John Phelan said that President Trump has long spoken about the need to own armored ships and this view has also been approved by many US Navy leaders.
The Trump-class future armored vehicle, named the U.S.S. Defiant, will be the largest, most dangerous, most flexible and also the most beautiful ship in the worlds oceans, Phelan said, thanking President Trump for bringing the game-changer potential to the US Navy.
Mr. Phelan described the Trump-class armored vehicle as a modernized version of the Iowa-class, calling it a generational investment.
According to President Trump, each armored vehicle will take about two and a half years to complete.
Last week, Minister Phelan also announced plans to build a new class of warships under the "Golden Squadron" framework. He said the goal of the new class of guards ships is US-designed and US-made ships, with the first of them planned to be launched in 2028.
