Billionaire Elon Musk agrees with the view that 50,000 billion USD is a worrying threshold for US public debt.

On August 21, according to TASS news agency, billionaire Elon Musk agreed with the opinion that the situation in the US may begin to collapse when the country's public debt reaches 50,000 billion USD.

Mr. Musk commented after a user posted a chart marking the 50,000 billion USD mark as an important threshold for US public debt. Sharing the post, Mr. Musk wrote: "This chart is accurate.

According to the content of the chart commented by Mr. Musk, the 50,000 billion USD mark is considered a point that could lead to serious fluctuations for the US economy. However, in this post, he did not provide a separate analysis of when the US may reach the above debt level or the specific consequences if that happens.

Musk's move was made just days after the US public debt for the first time exceeded the $40,000 billion mark. According to TASS, the US total debt has increased by about $20,000 billion in less than 10 years.

The $40,000 billion mark was set in the context that the US government continues to face a large budget deficit. The size of federal debt has increased rapidly in recent years as government spending exceeds revenue, while interest payments are also increasing.

According to data released by the US Treasury Department earlier, the country's total public debt exceeded 30,000 billion USD in January 2022 and continued to increase to more than 39,000 billion USD in March 2026. By July, this figure reached about 39,700 billion USD before exceeding the 40,000 billion USD mark in August.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will grow by 2.3% in 2026, according to TASS.

Mr. Musk's mention of the $50,000 billion mark comes as debate over the US financial situation continues to heat up. Previously, many officials and economic experts had warned about the impact of budget deficits, debt sizes and interest expenses on the fiscal outlook of the world's largest economy.
