French prosecutors searched X's office in Paris on February 3 as part of an investigation that began in January 2025 into allegations that the platform was used for political interference in France.
The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office also sent summons letters to Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino for voluntary interrogation on April 20 in Paris, as executives in practice and legally at the time of the investigated events. Ms. Yaccarino resigned as CEO X in July 2025 after 2 years in office.
The investigation is expanded to suspicions related to the AI tool Grok, a chatbot developed by Elon Musk's company xAI and integrated into X. Authorities are considering the possibility of Grok spreading content denying the Holocaust, as well as pornographic content created by deepfake.
These concerns stem from the reaction of the international community, when users discovered that they could sexualize images of women and children with simple commands. British and EU officials have opened related investigations.
Europol, the police agency of the European Union, said it has sent analysts to the scene to assist in the search process in Paris.
In July 2025, cybercrime prosecutors here proposed that the police open an investigation to clarify some allegations, including manipulation and data extraction from automated systems carried out by "a criminal gang", after receiving two complaints from January 2025.
A complaint filed by Mr. Eric Bothorel, a member of parliament from President Emmanuel Macron's party. Mr. Bothorel said that since Mr. Elon Musk took over social network X in 2022, the diversity of voices and choices on the platform has declined, along with personal interventions in management work.
