EU imposes 25% tax on many types of US goods

The EU approves US countermeasures to tariffs on industry-based aluminum and steel.

After weeks of consultations between member states, the EU Commission and sectors, the EU approved retaliatory measures on April 9.

EU member states have approved a 25% tariff on many US goods, including almonds, orange juice, poultry, soy, steel and aluminum, cigarettes and yachts. The move is in response to the 25% tariff the US imposes on the EU steel and aluminum.

Euronews pointed out that these are Europe's first retaliatory measures in the trade war waged by US President Donald Trump against global trade partners.

These measures are the first step in the EU's response to the trade war with the US.

In addition to aluminum and steel, the Trump administration has imposed a 25% customs debt on EU cars and a 20% counterpart tax on all EU imports. 70% of the EU's export turnover to the US is affected by these measures.

The EU Commission is drafting a second response package to be submitted early next week, the EU body revealed on April 8.
